The Hand II

The Hand of the Lord
is strong upon me -
I tremble
I shake
I lie awake at night
not sleeping for
pure fear of his
power, his might - I am
discomfited by
this life but must
do as I am bid and
not be recalcitrant, not
need the bit or the
yoke the animals need
to move forward, do
their task for the
master, the shire
horse the dark oxen
plodding home when
a day's ploughing
and heaving
are done.

I am a strange one,
set apart from
all that is familiar
and known - taken
for granted by those
of this time who
find the fitting easy
the easy song.
