You sloped about
In your raggedy clothes
Today doing a bit of
Desultory hoovering
And making a bacon
Sandwich or two -
But you fidgeted,
Fidgeted and were
Unsettled watching the TV -
Your gruff voice and your
Busyness didn't deceive me -
I saw you clearly waiting,
Waiting for her
To come home to you.
She was late.
And I wondered suddenly
If you would have
Any sort of a life if she never
Did arrive one day.
I wondered, then, what you would
Do without your wife
If you waited for her in vain.
