the green shadow

lost day of pain and
late sleep, all plans
awry, I tussled with
the intransigent grass
dug-in and hard to reach

the roots, too deep

the sun shone, as usual,
heat-wave overhead
unmoving, and all the
fields from here to there
are dead

now, the day breezes
have fled on
and all is still, the sun
gone over the hill,
we are in shadow

but it is green
