sum of years

a blowy day, intermittent
sun, I walked out
with strength
to meet an old companion
after a gap of many
years and the river
running under our bridges

she hadn't changed -
it could have been
yesterday we sat
together in her kitchen

sifting decisions and
wine glasses, talking
view and counter-view
of life down among the
masses

their children no longer
young - I remember
her madcap dashes,
blond hair flying -
now 21

flashes of all things
gone and done
but the breeze was blowing
today: a well-done sum
