asunder the years

the drive took me past
rest, pit-stop, and food -
rounding the corner the cars
almost met, and I
recognised her face -

she did not recognise me
but gesticulating
I got out and nearing
her face cleared
in surprise

extraordinary meeting
on an ordinary day
then close-in chats
with friends of long
standing

and the years fell away
only the faces of the
children told how
many there had been
